Amnesty International calls for the immediate release of Matiullah Wesa from Taliban custody

Marking the third month of his captivity, Amnesty International has called from the immediate release of educationalist Matiullah Wesa.

The founder of PenPath, Wesa, who had been advocating for girls’ right to education, was arrested by Taliban intelligence agents on 27 March, which was met with widespread condemnation from human rights groups, the UN, the EU and others.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Amnesty said Wesa’s detention is “a clear violation of the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly under international human rights law.”

The Taliban has not commented on Wesa’s status.
