Iran: No changes in our policy towards the Taliban

Iran has dismissed reports of handing over the Afghan embassy in Tehran to Taliban appointed diplomats.

Nasser Kanaani, the spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry, has said that there is no change in Iran’s position on how to interact with the Taliban government while confirming that Afghanistan’s head of mission would change.

“The end of a diplomat’s mission and handing over the embassy’s affairs to one of these serving diplomats does not mean a change in the embassy’s legal status,” he was quoted as saying in a Persian statement issued on Iran’s foreign ministry website.

He added that “there is no changes in position of the Islamic Republic of Iran on how to interact with the caretaker government of Afghanistan (Taliban)”.

The Taliban government is yet to be recognised by any country. Afghanistan’s embassies around the world, except in Islamabad, still operate under previous government’s diplomats.
