Keren Decker Urges ‘Kandahari Leaders’ to Support Human Rights Defenders

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, Karen Decker, the Chargé d’Affaires at the US Mission to Afghanistan based in Qatar, has urged the “Kandahari leaders” of the Taliban to support the human rights defenders and appreciate their efforts in Afghanistan.

On Saturday, December 10, Karen Decker said in a tweet thread that the US advocates the rights of all Afghans regardless of their gender, ethnicity, religion, and ability.

Decker wrote that she spoke with Afghan human rights defenders who defend access to education, the right to work and the protection of Afghanistan’s diverse population.

“I urge Kandahari leaders to support human rights defenders and their efforts and join the international community’s ongoing efforts to deliver dignity, freedom and justice for all.”, Decker added.

Afghanistan has faced a human rights crisis since the return of the Taliban to power.

Currently, girls above the 6th grade are not allowed to go to school, and female employees can no longer work in government offices.

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said that the brutal violation of women’s rights has been one of the most prominent “aspects” of the Taliban government to date.

The UN Mission called upon the Taliban regime to live up to commitments embedded in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a landmark document codifying everyone’s fundamental rights and freedoms.

The UN urged the de facto authorities to reverse the slew of edicts and practices they have introduced that restrict the basic rights of Afghans, especially those of women and girls.
