The old city of Baghlan-e-Markazi district has fallen to the Taliban militants in the northern Baghlan province, according to local authorities.
The Taliban took control of the old city earlier this morning, Thursday, May 06, without any resistance from the security forces stationed in the area, Ferozuddin Aymaq, a member of Baghlan Provincial Council, told Kabul Now. He added security forces who were stationed in two security outposts in the area are missing and have likely surrendered to the Taliban.
Security officials have not commented regarding it so far.
The militant group, however, has claimed that a total of 200 government forces have surrendered to the militants with their weapons and munitions. The Taliban has also claimed that their fighters control most parts of Baghlan-e-Markazi district.
On the other hand, a statement issued by the Ministry of Defense (MoD), said that five Taliban militants, including the group’s shadow governor for Nahrin district known as Qar Majid, were killed in military operations in Nahrin district and in Chashma Shir along the Baghlan-Samangan highway.
The Ministry has further claimed that nine Taliban fighters were wounded and one other was arrested during the operation.
The Taliban, however, has not commented in this regard so far.
This comes as the Taliban militants overran Burka district of the same province two days ago.
