Turkey will host a trilateral meeting on Afghanistan that will be held tomorrow, Friday, April 23. Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Turkey will attend the meeting, a statement issued by the Turkish foreign ministry today, April 22.
“Developments on the Afghan peace process, cooperation in the fields of security, energy, connectivity, and irregular migration will be discussed during the Trilateral Meeting,” part of the statement read.
As per the statement, the Turkish foreign minister, H.E. Cavusoglu, will also hold bilateral meetings with his Pakistani and Afghan counterparts on the sideline of the meeting.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Haneef Atmar has left Kabul for Turkey to attend the trilateral meeting in Istanbul, said a statement issued by the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Atmar will have sideline meetings in the Istanbul meeting, according to the statement.
This comes after the Istanbul conference on Afghanistan was postponed.
“In the view of recent developments, and after extensive consultations with the parties, it has been agreed to postpone the conference to a later date when conditions for making meaningful progress would be more favorable,” Turkey, Qatar, and the United Nations – co-conveners of the conference- said in joint-statement issued on April 21, 2021.
The Istanbul conference was set to be held from April 24 to May 04 in Istanbul. Representatives of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Taliban delegation, and regional and international actors were expected to attend the meeting.
