In a meeting with Herat governor, Abdul Qayyum Rahimi, the US top General in Afghanistan, Gen. Scott Miller, stressed on ramping up military operations against the Taliban militants.
During the meeting, which was held on Wednesday, January 15, commander of NATO’s Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan expressed satisfaction with improvement of security conditions and achievements of Afghan forces against terrorist activities in Herat, according to a statement issued by governor office.
The statement added that the US top General emphasized on equipping and strengthening Afghan security forces.
Praising Afghan security forces for suppressing the Taliban, Herat’s governor, noted that Afghan defense and security forces have been empowered in terms of capability to suppress the militants.
Herat local authorities, meanwhile, have urged the top NATO Commander in Afghanistan to provide more air support for Afghan security forces.
Afghan forces have recently made huge achievements as the result of a military campaign against the insurgents in different parts of the country.
In their latest achievements, 50 Taliban militants, under command of Mullah Abdul Qader and Arbab Abdullah, surrendered to Afghan forces in Shahrak district of the central Ghor province, according to spokesperson for the provincial governor, Abulhai Khatibi.
He said that 100 militants have surrendered to Afghan security forces since the beginning of a clearance operation launched across Ghor-Herat highway.
Gen. Miller’s statement comes while the United States and the Taliban have come to the verge signing a peace deal.
