Roof Collapse in Nangarhar Claims Three Lives

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Taliban police command in Nangarhar says that as a result of the collapse of the roof of a house in Achin district of this province, three people, including a woman, have died and a girl has been injured.

Sayed Tayyab Hamad, spokesperson for the Taliban police command in Nangarhar, said that this incident took place on (Monday, May 18) in the “Abdulkhel” area of Achin district.

He said that the cause of the roof collapse of this house was a severe storm.

In the current solar year, and following heavy rainfall, several cases of deaths due to the collapse of house roofs have been reported.

However, this is the first case reported in which a house roof collapsed due to a storm.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of poorly constructed homes in rural Afghanistan, where extreme weather events such as storms and heavy rains can quickly lead to structural failures.

It also underscores the growing need for improved housing standards, disaster preparedness, and emergency response systems to reduce civilian casualties in weather-related incidents

Taliban authorities say more than 20 provinces have been impacted by severe weather in recent weeks, with dozens of people reported dead or injured, many of them women and children.

According to figures from the Taliban’s disaster management authority, at least 190 people have been killed and around 250 others injured over the past month due to weather-related incidents, including house collapses.

Thousands of homes have been damaged or destroyed, farmland has been affected, and many families have been displaced.

Afghanistan remains highly vulnerable to seasonal weather extremes, particularly in rural and mountainous areas where homes are often built with mud and other fragile materials, making them susceptible to collapse during heavy rainfall.
