KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The National Resistance Front of Afghanistan says that two Taliban officials from the group’s Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice were killed in an attack carried out by its forces in Herat Province.
In a statement, the group said that the attack was carried out at around 7:30 p.m. (Friday, May 8) in the Pol-e Pashtun area of Injil District, Herat Province.
The National Resistance Front of Afghanistan did not provide information about any possible casualties among its own forces during the attack.
Local Taliban officials in Herat Province have not yet commented on the attack.
The National Resistance Front of Afghanistan has previously also carried out attacks against Taliban forces in Herat Province in western Afghanistan.
The latest claim follows another operation reported about four weeks ago, when an armed anti-Taliban group said its forces carried out a rocket attack on a Taliban outpost near the district administration building in Tala wa Barfak District of Baghlan Province, killing four Taliban members and injuring two others.
No information was provided at the time regarding possible casualties among the attacking forces.
The incidents reflects the continued presence of armed resistance activities in parts of Afghanistan, particularly in areas where anti-Taliban groups have periodically claimed operations against Taliban positions. Such attacks underscore the ongoing security challenges facing the country despite Taliban claims of nationwide stability and control.
Following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, many opposition armed groups were formed, with two still actively fighting the Taliban in various provinces. The NRF and AFF, largely composed of former ANDSF members, have been particularly active in Kabul city and the northern regions of the country.
In addition, the AFF was formed in the aftermath of the Taliban’s return to power in 2021 and is led by General Yasin Zia, the former Chief of Staff of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF). Composed largely of former ANDSF personnel, the group has been active in launching attacks against the Taliban, particularly in Panjshir, Kabul, Balkh, and surrounding areas
