Woman killed in explosion of war remnant in eastern Afghanistan

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A woman has been killed and two others, including a child, injured after a piece of unexploded ordnance left over from past conflicts detonated in Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province, local sources say.

The explosion occurred on Wednesday (January 8) in the Aghzabagh area of Asmar district, according to the sources. The injured were taken to hospital, where their condition has been described as critical.

So far, Taliban local authorities in Kunar have not commented on the incident, and further details remain unclear.

Just two days earlier, a mortar shell explosion in the Mazar Dara area of Nurgal district in the same province killed one person and wounded six others.

Decades of war have left large parts of Afghanistan contaminated with landmines and unexploded explosive remnants, posing an ongoing threat to civilians.

According to United Nations figures, around 3.3 million people in Afghanistan live within one kilometre of areas contaminated by landmines and explosive materials.
