KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – More than 1,800 Afghan migrants were deported from Pakistan and Iran and returned to Afghanistan in a single day, the Taliban-run Commission for the Handling of Migrants’ Problems said on Sunday (January 11).
According to the commission, 1,431 people were deported from Pakistan and entered Afghanistan through the Torkham border crossing, while another 204 returned via Spin Boldak.
The commission added that 153 people were expelled from Iran and crossed into Afghanistan through the Pul-e-Abrisham border point, while 28 others entered through Islam Qala.
Pakistan and Iran have significantly intensified the deportation of Afghan migrants during the current solar year, expelling more than 2.5 million people, the commission said.
International humanitarian organizations have repeatedly criticized the deportations and called on both countries to halt the expulsions.
Aid agencies and international bodies have also warned that the rapid and large-scale return of migrants is worsening Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis and have urged the international community to provide urgent support.
