KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Three people, including a woman and two children, were killed when the roof of a mud house collapsed in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan, local sources said, highlighting the risks of unsafe housing during harsh winter conditions.
According to the sources, the incident occurred on Saturday morning in Khakrez district following heavy rainfall, which caused the roof of the home to give way. Three members of the same family, including the woman and two children, died as a result.
Afghanistan has experienced a heavy rainfall and snowfall since Friday, affecting multiple provinces. In Herat, extreme cold and snow have also led to fatalities. Taliban authorities confirmed that at least three people attempting to cross into Iran died in the border region due to severe weather, while local media sources reported a significantly higher toll of at least 30 deaths.
Roof collapses and other weather-related accidents, including flash floods, are common during Afghanistan’s rainy and winter seasons, especially in rural areas, where fragile housing structures, poor infrastructure, and limited safety standards often lead to casualties.
