The Afghan Embassy in Japan has announced that it will suspend its operations starting 31 January 2026.
In a statement released on Friday (December 26), the embassy said the decision was taken in light of the current circumstances and following consultations with the Japanese government.
According to the statement, all activities and services – including political, economic, cultural and consular affairs – will be suspended until further notice.
The embassy, which continues to operate under the banner of Afghanistan’s former government, said that Japan will continue to respect the inviolability of the embassy premises in accordance with the Vinna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, including the protection of the building, its property and archives.
The embassy did not provide a detailed explanation for the suspension of its activities.
In recent years, several Afghan embassies abroad have ceased operations amid pressure from the Taliban on the host countries.
Japan has maintained engagement with the Taliban over the past four years and has kept its embassy open in Kabul. However, Tokyo has not formally recognized the Taliban-led government.
