The World Food Programme (WFP) says hunger in Afghanistan is escalating at a rapid pace as the country moves into the harsh winter season.
In a report released on Tuesday (November 25), the agency warned that “a single bag of flour or rice can mean the difference between survival and despair.”
According to the WFP, food insecurity in Afghanistan has become one of the world’s most severe hunger crisis. The country now ranks fourth globally for acute child malnutrition.
The organisation added that with winter approaching, malnutrition among women and children – already at its highest levels – is expected to worsen further.
UN figures show that 3.5 million children in Afghanistan are currently suffering from malnutrition.
Women and children remain the most vulnerable groups in the country’s deepening humanitarian emergency, and the reduction in international aid is placing them at even greater risk.
