KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A man stabbed his wife to death and seriously injured his daughter in Afghanistan’s western Farah province, local sources and Taliban authorities confirmed.
According to local sources, the incident took place on Tuesday, November 18, in Farah’s Gulistan district. The man reportedly used a knife, killing his wife at the scene and leaving his daughter with serious injuries.
Taliban authorities in Farah confirmed the incident, saying that the man was arrested soon after it occurred and that an investigation is ongoing. They have not released details about the victims’ ages or identities, and the motive for the incident remains unknown.
This is the latest in a series of similar incidents, most of which are attributed to domestic violence, which rights groups say has significantly increased in the country since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
Taliban authorities have closed all women’s protection centers set up under the previous government and dismantled the legal and institutional frameworks that once provided safety and justice, leaving many women and girls trapped in a cycle of violence.
Between January 2022 and June 2024, Afghan Witness, a human rights monitoring project, recorded at least 840 cases of violence against women and girls, including 332 deaths. Experts say the number of cases is likely higher, as many incidents go unreported due to fear of retaliation or social stigma.
