India Sends Food Aid to Earthquake Survivors in Northern Afghanistan

KABUL — India has sent food assistance to people affected by the recent earthquake in northern Afghanistan, the country’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Monday.

Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the MEA, confirmed the shipment in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on November 3, sharing photos of the aid being dispatched.

India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said he had spoken with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s acting foreign minister, to convey condolences and express solidarity with the Afghan people.

“We stand in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan in this difficult time,” Jaishankar said in his post on X.

According to Jaishankar, India has already sent an initial consignment of humanitarian aid, while additional shipments of medical supplies will follow soon.

The aid delivery follows a 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck northern Afghanistan on Sunday night, shaking several provinces. According to Taliban authorities, at least 20 people were killed and 639 others injured in the quake.

Local officials say the tremor caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure, leaving many families in urgent need of food, shelter, and medical care.

India has a history of providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, including shipments of wheat and medicine during previous crises. Kabul authorities have welcomed India’s latest aid, urging continued international support for relief and recovery efforts in the affected regions.
