Body of Young Man Found in Kandahar Amid Rise in Mysterious Killings

KABUL – The body of a young man has been found in southern Kandahar province, local sources said Saturday, marking the latest in a series of mysterious killings reported across Afghanistan.

According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the body was discovered on Friday night in the mountainous area of Daman district. The victim, believed to be between 25 and 30 years old, appeared to have been strangled to death.

The motive behind the killing remains unclear, and Taliban authorities in Kandahar have not yet commented on the incident.

Efforts are underway to identify the victim, the source added.

Local residents reportedly transferred the body to the Daman district health center in hopes of locating his relatives.

This is the second such case in Kandahar in less than a week. Two days earlier, another young man’s body was found in the province under similar circumstances.

The discovery comes amid growing reports of mysterious killings and violent crimes across Afghanistan. The UK-based rights organization Rawadari recently reported at least 251 cases of mysterious, targeted, or extrajudicial killings in the past six months, a 30 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The organization said many of the cases were allegedly linked to Taliban members or unidentified armed individuals.

The surge in such incidents has raised widespread concern over deteriorating security conditions, despite the Taliban’s repeated claims that they have restored stability since returning to power in 2021.
