KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), an armed anti-Taliban group, said its fighters carried out five attacks across multiple provinces over the past week, killing and injuring 14 Taliban members.
In a series of posts on X, the AFF, which formed following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, said three of the attacks occurred in Kabul, while one attack each took place in Kandahar and Kunduz provinces.
The latest attack occurred on Wednesday in the Maiwand district of Kandahar, where the AFF said its fighters killed two Taliban members and injured another at a checkpoint. In Kabul, three separate attacks in PD1 on Monday, PD15 on Saturday, and the Kote Sangi area in PD5 on Thursday reportedly killed seven Taliban fighters and wounded three.
In Kunduz, the AFF said its fighters killed a Taliban commander, Qari Khalid, in Chahar Dara district.
The Taliban have not commented on the attacks.
The AFF and the National Resistance Front (NRF) are the main armed groups actively clashing with the Taliban. Both groups are largely composed of former Afghan National Defence and Security Forces members and conduct guerrilla-style operations targeting Taliban checkpoints, vehicles, and military positions.
In his latest report to the UN Security Council last month, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that while armed resistance groups do not pose a major challenge to the Taliban, they remain active and continue carrying out attacks. The report noted that between May and July, these groups claimed responsibility for 47 attacks, 19 of which were verified by the UN.
