KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – An anti-Taliban armed group says it has killed a Taliban commander and three of his bodyguards in an attack in northern Baghlan province.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the National Resistance Front (NRF) said that its fighters carried out a targeted operation in Central Baghlan district on Sunday night, killing Mullah Hebat Khan, the commander of the Taliban’s rapid reaction unit for neighboring Takhar province.
The group said the Taliban vehicle was destroyed and several weapons were seized. It added that none of its fighters were harmed during the operation.
The Taliban have not commented on the reported attack or the killing of their commander.
The NRF, led by Ahmad Massoud, son of the late anti-Taliban commander Ahmad Shah Massoud, was formed after the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. It is largely composed of former members of the Afghan security forces.
Since then, the group has waged an armed campaign against Taliban, particularly in Panjshir, Kabul, and surrounding provinces. It frequently claims deadly attacks on Taliban fighters across Afghanistan.
In its annual report, the NRF said it conducted 150 targeted operations in 17 provinces during the solar year 1402 (March 2023–March 2024), claiming more than 400 Taliban casualties.
