Afghanistan Earthquake: UN Calls for $139 Million to Help Nearly Half a Million People

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The United Nations is appealing for more than $139 million to help hundreds of thousands of people affected by last week’s devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Tuesday it needs $139.6 million in emergency funding to carry out a four-month relief plan that will support nearly 457,000 people affected by the disaster. The aid will target families directly affected by the 6.0-magnitude quake, which struck on August 31 in Kunar, Nangarhar, and Laghman provinces.
