Afghan Student Seeking to Document Refugee Stories Transferred to Torbat Jam Prison

TEHRAN, Iran — An Afghan sociology student at the University of Tehran, Sara Gohari, has been transferred from solitary confinement in Mashhad to Torbat Jam prison, her lawyer said Sunday.

Reza Shafakhah, an Iranian defense attorney, wrote on X that Gohari called him from Torbat Jam following her transfer from an Iranian intelligence facility in Mashhad. Her case is being investigated in Taybad on charges of “propaganda against the state.”

Human rights group Hengaw previously reported that Gohari, 29, was arrested on July 6 at the Taybad border crossing as she traveled to conduct independent research on Afghan migrants. The arrest was made without a judicial warrant, and for more than 10 days neither her family nor legal counsel had any contact with her.

Gohari had indicated on Instagram that she intended to document stories of Afghan migrants deported from Iran. Her detention comes amid a mass deportation campaign.

Supporters have launched an online campaign with the hashtag “Where is Sara Gohari?” to pressure authorities for her whereabouts.

Iranian authorities have not released details on the evidence against Gohari or her legal status. Her sudden disappearance and transfer highlight growing concerns about the treatment of Afghan migrants and students in Iran.
