KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A 32-year-old man was killed on Wednesday night in the southern province of Helmand, local sources confirmed.
The victim, identified as Yasin Bahar, was reportedly murdered inside his uncle’s house in Lashkargah, the provincial capital. While one source told KabulNow that he was killed by unknown assailants, others say armed robbers may have been responsible.
Bahar was known as an active youth in Helmand and had been involved in civil activism before the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021.
Mohammad Karim Atal, a former Helmand representative in Afghanistan’s republican parliament, described Bahar as a “passionate, emotional, and active” young man. He expressed condolences to the victim’s family, calling the perpetrators “cowardly bandits.”
Taliban officials in Helmand have not yet commented on the killing.
The incident comes amid a sharp rise in mysterious killings and violent crime across Afghanistan. In the past week alone, at least seven such deaths have been reported, including those of two young children—a five-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy.
Several countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia, continue to advise against travel to Afghanistan, citing ongoing security threats and rampant criminal activity.
Despite the Taliban’s repeated claims of having restored security, they face mounting criticism from citizens, human rights groups, and activists over their failure to prevent violence and carry out transparent investigations into such crimes.
