KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), an anti-Taliban armed group, claims it killed and wounded four Taliban fighters in an attack in northern Kunduz province.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, the AFF said its “freedom fighters” targeted a Taliban checkpoint in Kunduz city on the evening of Friday, June 13.
The armed group said the operation resulted in the killing of two Taliban members and the wounding of two others.
The Taliban has not yet responded to the claim.
The AFF is one of several armed groups that emerged after the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. Comprised largely of former Afghan security personnel, the group is active in multiple provinces and says it has launched more than 230 attacks on Taliban targets in the past two years, resulting in hundreds of casualties.
General Yasin Zia, the former chief of personnel of the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF), leads the AFF.
Despite Taliban efforts to downplay the activities of opposition forces, reports — including from the United Nations — confirm dozens of attacks by groups such as the AFF and the National Resistance Front (NRF).
In a recent report to the UN Security Council, Secretary-General António Guterres said armed opposition groups launched 91 confirmed attacks on Taliban forces between November 2024 and January 2025, with the majority carried out by the AFF and the NRF.
