Taliban Flogs Woman and Two Men in Public in Northern Afghanistan

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Taliban Supreme Court announced the public flogging of three people, including a woman, in Takhar province in northern Afghanistan.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the court said the punishment was carried out in Yangi Qala district on Thursday, May 22. Each person received 39 lashes. Two of them were also sentenced to two years in prison.

The Taliban has continued to implement corporal punishments despite repeated criticism from the United Nations and human rights organizations.

Since the beginning of May, at least 64 people — many of them women — have been publicly flogged across Afghanistan, according to Taliban announcements.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) recorded 180 cases of public flogging in the first three months of 2025. Among the victims were three girls.

The Taliban has also carried out at least ten public executions for murder in recent years.

The group defends these punishments, saying they are based on their interpretation of Islamic law. They accuse international critics of opposing Islam and disrespecting their religious practices.
