KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A former soldier was shot and killed by unknown armed men in Khwaja Sabz Posh district of Faryab province, local sources confirmed.
Three residents told KabulNow that the victim, Mohammad Shah Baik, was gunned down Wednesday night while returning from a gathering in Dehnaw village.
Baik had previously served in the police and public uprising forces under the former government. More recently, he owned a flour shop in the district’s local market.
The motive and identities of the attackers remain unknown.
Taliban officials in Faryab have yet to comment on the killing.
This is the fourth reported killing in under 24 hours, following separate incidents in Nangarhar, Nimroz, and Jowzjan provinces.
The wave of mysterious killings and rising criminal incidents has heightened fears among citizens, challenging Taliban claims of nationwide security. Since the group’s return to power in 2021, hundreds of former security personnel have been detained, tortured, or killed.
Human rights organizations continue to urge the Taliban to halt retaliatory actions and uphold the rights of all citizens, including former soldiers.
