Zahir Qadir, Former Afghan MP, Arrested in Kenya, Faces U.S. Extradition

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Abdul Zahir Qadir, a former member of Afghanistan’s parliament, has been arrested by Kenyan police and is expected to be extradited to the United States, according to the Nairobi Times.

Prosecutors say Qadir arrived in Nairobi on April 14 aboard a Qatar Airways flight. He was detained at a hotel in the capital, and a local court has approved his continued custody.

A U.S. district court in New York had issued a warrant for his arrest on March 25, charging him with conspiracy to import narcotics and possession of heavy weapons.

U.S. authorities have formally requested his extradition.

Kenyan judges agreed to his detention, citing a risk of flight. His reasons for traveling to Kenya remain unclear.

Qadir previously served as a parliamentary representative for Nangarhar province.

After the Taliban’s return to power, he remained in Afghanistan, met with Taliban officials, and expressed support for their policies.
