AFF Claims Killing 229 Taliban Members in 87 Attacks Over the Past Year

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), an anti-Taliban armed group, announced that it has carried out 87 targeted attacks over the past year, killing 229 Taliban members and injuring 166 others.

In a statement on Thursday marking its third anniversary, the group said its operations have now expanded to 31 provinces across Afghanistan.

According to the AFF, it has conducted a total of 330 operations since its formation, resulting in the deaths of 821 Taliban members and injuries to 868 others.

The attacks have primarily targeted Taliban bases, checkpoints, and gatherings. The group also acknowledged losing 13 of its own fighters in clashes with the Taliban.

Over the past year, the AFF claims to have strengthened its organizational structure, improved operational and intelligence capabilities, and expanded its political activities. A key objective, it added, has been to discourage international actors from engaging with or lobbying for the Taliban’s official recognition.

The AFF was formed in the aftermath of the Taliban’s return to power in 2021 and is led by General Yasin Zia, the former Chief of Staff of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF). Composed largely of former ANDSF personnel, the group has been active in launching attacks against the Taliban, particularly in Panjshir, Kabul, Balkh, and surrounding areas.
