KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The National Resistance Front (NRF), an armed anti-Taliban group, has claimed responsibility for an attack on the Taliban military prosecutor’s office in Kabul, killing two Taliban members and wounding several others.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the NRF stated that its “freedom fighters” launched the attack on Tuesday, January 14, at 6:30 PM, targeting the gate of the military prosecutor’s office in Kabul’s 10th district.
The group reported that the operation led to the deaths of a Taliban commander and one of his associates, with several others injured. Additionally, a military vehicle belonging to the Taliban was destroyed.
The NRF highlighted that the attack was carried out in response to the office’s role in the torture, harassment, pursuit, and detention of former military personnel.
The Taliban authorities have yet to comment on the attack.
Following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, many armed groups have emerged, some continuing to fight the Taliban across several provinces. The National Resistance Front and The Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF) have been particularly active, especially in Kabul and northern Afghanistan.
Both groups, largely made up of former security forces, have engaged in numerous clashes with the Taliban. Recently, they have intensified their guerrilla attacks against the Taliban across Afghanistan.
The NRF reported last month that it had conducted 25 attacks on the Taliban in several provinces over the past month, killing and injuring 71 Taliban members.
The group’s leader, Ahmad Massoud, said in an interview with CNN that the NRF fields around 5,000 active fighters. He emphasized that their fight goes beyond confronting the Taliban, as they are also targeting up to 20 other terrorist organizations operating within Afghanistan.
