KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Taliban agents have detained three members of the former Afghanistan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) in Kabul and taken them to an unknown location, according to local sources.
Sources identified the former ANDSF members as Ghyasuddin, Burhanuddin, and Homayoon, originally from Panjshir province, who were detained in Kabul city on Sunday, November 10.
According to sources, Ghyasuddin and Burhanuddin were members of the army under the previous government, while Homayoon was a police officer and also part of the security forces protecting Abdullah Abdullah, the former head of the High Council for National Reconciliation.
Sources further explained that these individuals fled to Iran after the Taliban’s return to power but were recently deported and have been living in Kabul since then.
Relatives of the former ANDSF members have confirmed their detention to KabulNow, expressing concern about their fate and wellbeing as they were taken to an undisclosed location.
The Taliban authorities have not yet commented on the incidents.
After their return to power in August 2021, the Taliban’s supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, announced a “general amnesty” for employees of the previous government. Despite this, local commanders and members have continued to carry out retaliatory attacks, particularly targeting former ANDSF members.
Over the past three years, hundreds of former government employees, particularly former soldiers, have been detained, tortured, gone missing, and in some cases, even killed across the country.
In its latest report to the UN Security Council, the UN mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) documented at least 24 cases of arbitrary detention, 10 cases of torture, and five cases of revenge killings of former soldiers between July and September 2024.
The UN and human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized the Taliban for revenge killings and widespread human rights violations, urging the regime to uphold the rights and freedoms of all citizens, including former ANDSF members.
