KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Taliban intelligence agents have detained Jawed Kohistani, a well-known political and military analyst, in Kabul city, local sources confirmed.
Local sources informed KabulNow that Mr. Kohistani was detained by the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence (GDI) in the Sarai Shamali neighborhood of Kabul on Thursday, September 26.
According to the sources, Kohistani’s mobile phone has been switched off since then, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
The reason for his detention remains unclear, and the Taliban authorities have yet to provide any explanation on the matter.
Jawed Kohistani was one of the few analysts discussing political and military issues in Afghanistan during the republic government era prior to the Taliban’s takeover.
However, according to the sources, he has not participated in any political or military discussions over the past three years of Taliban rule in the country.
Since their return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, the Taliban, despite their declared “general amnesty,” have arrested, detained, tortured, and, in some cases, killed dozens of activists, former government officials, and critics of their policies.
UN experts, rights groups, and activists have consistently accused the Taliban of serious human rights violations. They express concern that acts of revenge killings and enforced disappearances of civilians and former soldiers have not ceased, despite the regime’s proclaimed “general amnesty.”
