KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The National Resistance Front (NRF) and the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), armed resistance groups, have reported several attacks in recent days, claiming to have killed and injured Taliban members, including commanders.
In a social media post, the NRF said that its “freedom fighters” conducted an operation targeting a Taliban checkpoint in the 13th security district of Kabul city on July 21. The attack resulted in the death of the checkpoint’s commander and injured another “terrorist.”
In a statement on July 20, the NRF reported that a Taliban commander named Mawlawi Mohammad Hesam and his two guards were killed in an operation in northern Badghis province on July 18.
According to the NRF statement, its fighters targeted a Taliban base at the Chinese camp in the Ghowrmach district of Badghis province and also destroyed Taliban vehicles in the attack.
Meanwhile, over the past two days, the AFF, another anti-Taliban armed group, reported two attacks on the Taliban in Kabul and Baghlan provinces.
According to the AFF statement, on Monday, July 22, its fighters targeted a Taliban intelligence convoy in the Kart-e-Sakhi neighborhood of Kabul City, killing four Taliban fighters and injuring another.
The AFF also claimed that on July 21, its fighters conducted an operation targeting Mullah Zarin Gujor, a “notorious” Taliban commander known as the head of Baghlan province transportation. The attack resulted in the deaths of two Taliban fighters and injured another. The AFF added that the exact fate of the Taliban commander remains unknown.
The armed groups emphasized that none of their forces were killed or injured in these operations.
Taliban authorities have not yet commented on these attacks.
The NRF and AFF, composed mainly of former security forces, have engaged in numerous clashes with the Taliban. Recently, they have intensified their guerrilla attacks against the Taliban throughout Afghanistan.
While the Taliban downplay the impact of these armed groups and their attacks, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted in his report released last month that these groups conducted at least 43 verified attacks on Taliban forces in the past three months.
“The Afghanistan Freedom Front carried out 14 attacks, all of which took place in Kabul City, compared with the 24 confirmed attacks recorded in the previous reporting period,” said Guterres. “The National Resistance Front carried out 29 confirmed attacks, with 20 in Kabul, 6 in Takhar Province, 2 in Baghlan Province, and 1 in Parwan Province,” he added.
