The Iranian Special Representative and Ambassador to Afghanistan, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, has accused the United States of trying to turn Afghanistan into a center of crisis for its neighbors.
In an interview with the Iranian state news agency IRNA on Wednesday, Qomi asserted that after two decades of “occupation,” the US failed and had to withdraw. He also claimed that the US is trying to recall the special forces it trained during its presence in Afghanistan and return them to the country under certain conditions.
“The United States does not want stability or an improvement in the economy, trade, and security in Afghanistan because it believes that this would lead to investment from countries like China, with which the US is in serious competition,” he stated.
He also criticized the United States for increasing pressure on the people of Afghanistan under the pretext of human rights and women’s rights.
Qomi further stated that Iran and Pakistan’s policy of promoting stability and security in Afghanistan is not only in the best interests of the Afghanistan people but also in line with regional security and the national interests of both countries.
“The security of Iran and Pakistan is closely linked to the situation in Afghanistan. Any development that takes place in Afghanistan will have a direct impact on the security of these two countries,” he said.
Qomi’s remarks follow a meeting in Islamabad earlier this month between the foreign ministers of Iran and Pakistan, where both countries reiterated their commitment to cooperation and dialogue on Afghanistan.
