Taliban in Sar-e-Pul province initiate book seizures in effort to enforce sharia

Taliban authorities in the northern province of Sar-e-Pul have started to seize books from bookshops that they believe are not in line with Sharia.

The group’s directorates of Information and Culture, Vice and Virtue, Intelligence and Hajj, have began book seizures as a joint initiative.

Umair Sar-e-Puli, a Taliban spokesperson in the province, said that they will continue to monitor bookshops to ensure they don’t stock books which are against “Sharia and Islamic principles”.

The Taliban has severely restricted media and banned sales of some books across Afghanistan.
