Taliban cuts pay for teachers who received UNICEF allowance

The Taliban’s Ministry of Finance has cut the pay of teachers and vocational training instructors who received a $200 allowance from UNICEF last November. The money will be deducted salaries in two instalments in February and March.

In a letter to provincial governors, the group’s Finance Ministry says teachers and instructors have been double-paid and thus should have the additional payment they’re received deducted from their salaries.

But those subjected to the pay deduction say the UNICEF payments were a one off allowance to help with the costs of living, not a salary.

A teacher who didn’t want to be named, told KabulNow that “Instead of helping us, the Taliban is taking away from us.”
