Black fungus or mucormycosis cases is increasing among the Covid-19 patients in Afghanistan as two patients tested positive over past few days for the rare disease, according to the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH).
Acting health minister, Wahid Majroh, confirmed the black fungus cases is on rise.
Mirwais Alizai, spokesperson for the MoHE, told Kabul Now they recorded two cases of the black fungus today, July 03.
He added they have also registered a suspicious case but it has yet to be verified.
Updates on Covid-19 cases
This comes as Afghanistan is facing the third wave of Covid-19 with a much higher rate in deaths and infections than the first and second waves of the pandemic.
The health ministry said yesterday, July 02, that it recorded 1,309 new cases of Covid-19 and 59 deaths over the last 24 hours.
With the new cases, the total number of those tested positive for the coronavirus amounts to 123, 465 and those who died of the pandemic disease reached 5,107 in the country.
A total of 72,700 have recovered from the disease.
On his Facebook page, the acting health minister warned more people will die if the people deal with the disease recklessly as the Covid-19 is spreading widely all over the country.
He underlined the coronavirus can be contained by observing the preventive measures and vaccination.
Afghanistan has so far injected around one millions doses of Covid-19 vaccine. The country will receive 1.5 million doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine this week, Majroh said. He added Afghanistan will receive 1.5 million more doses of this vaccine one or two weeks later.
According to him, the Afghan government will also receive around 500,000 doses of Covishield through the QVAX initiative.
