KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), an armed anti-Taliban group, said its fighters launched rocket attacks on Taliban military facilities and training centres at Bagram Airfield in Parwan province, killing or wounding more than 10 Taliban members.
In a statement posted on X, the group said the “coordinated and intelligence-based” operation was carried out on Thursday evening, October 22. It claimed the attack inflicted casualties and material damage on Taliban forces stationed at the former U.S. military base.
“According to AFF sources at Bagram Air Base, more than 10 Taliban members were killed or wounded and transported to medical facilities,” the group said. It added that its fighters withdrew safely to secure positions after completing the operation.
A video released by the AFF appears to show a projectile being launched and an explosion at night.
The Taliban have not officially commented on the incident.
Bagram Airfield, located in Parwan province, was one of the principal military bases used by US and NATO forces during their two-decade presence in Afghanistan. It served as a major centre for military operations, troop deployments and command before international forces withdrew in 2021 and the Taliban returned to power.
The AFF was formed after the Taliban takeover in August 2021 and is largely composed of former members of Afghanistan’s military and security forces. It is led by General Yasin Zia, a former senior Afghan security official who previously served as head of the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF).
Since its formation, the AFF has fought Taliban forces, particularly in Panjshir, Kabul and neighbouring provinces. The group has claimed responsibility for attacks that it says have killed hundreds of Taliban members.
In recent months, the group has reported increased guerrilla operations targeting Taliban military bases and checkpoints in several major cities, particularly in northeastern Badakhshan province.
