KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – An 18-year-old man ended his life by shooting himself in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province on Friday after the family of the girl he wanted to marry turned down his proposal, local sources said.
The man, named Hijratullah, died in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, on Friday afternoon. According to sources, he had been in love with the girl, but her family rejected the marriage proposal, prompting the tragic incident.
Before taking his own life, Hijratullah left a note that read: “If she cannot be mine, I want to kill myself.” He then shot himself with a handgun, the sources added.
Local Taliban authorities have not commented on the incident.
Similar cases involving young people have been reported across Afghanistan in recent years. Arranged marriages remain common in many parts of the country, where families often play a decisive role in approving marriage proposals. Social and cultural pressures surrounding marriage decisions have at times been cited as contributing factors in cases of emotional distress and suicide among young Afghans.
