KABUL, AFGHANISTAN -Local sources in Nangarhar province located in eastern Afghanistan say that armed robbers have killed two young men in the Chaparhar district and in Jalalabad, the provincial capital.
Local sources told KabulNow that the incidents occurred over the past two days.
In the first incident, on Thursday evening (July 2), a young man identified as Fayaz-ur-Rahman was killed in the Wilayato area of the Eighth Police District of Jalalabad.
A source said that Fayaz-ur-Rahman was returning home from congregational prayers when he encountered armed robbers. The assailants took his money and mobile phone before killing him.
In a similar incident in the Qala Sheikh village of Chaparhar district, Nangarhar province, another young man was also killed by armed robbers.
A local source told KabulNow that the incident occurred yesterday (Friday, July 3).
According to the source, the robbers severely wounded a young man identified as Zinatullah, stole 12,500 Pakistani rupees in cash along with his mobile phone, and fled the scene.
Zinatullah succumbed to his injuries several hours later.
These latest killings underscore the persistent security challenges facing ordinary Afghans, as incidents of armed robbery and deadly violence continue to be reported despite official assurances of improved public safety.
A report released in March 2026 by the UK-based human rights group Rawadari documented at least 611 cases of targeted, suspicious or extrajudicial killings and injuries across Afghanistan in 2025 — a rise of more than 40% from the previous year. The victims included former government employees, individuals accused of links to opposition groups, protesters, tribal elders and other community figures.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns over public security and law enforcement in Afghanistan. While the Taliban frequently cite improvements in nationwide security since returning to power in 2021, reports of armed robberies, targeted killings, and other criminal incidents continue to emerge from several provinces.
Human rights organizations have also raised concerns over the lack of due process in cases where individuals accused of crimes are killed before facing judicial proceedings or an independent investigation.
