Two Killed in Separate Incidents in Afghanistan as Mysterious Killings Surge

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Two men were killed in separate incidents in eastern and southern Afghanistan over the past 24 hours, Taliban authorities said, as reports of mysterious killings and other violent crimes continue to rise across the country.

The Taliban police command in eastern Nuristan province said a man identified as Mohammad Gul was killed on Tuesday morning in the Ada Kunar area near Parun, the provincial capital.

Ahmad Bashir Barakzai, spokesperson for the command, said one suspect had been arrested in connection with the killing and that investigations were ongoing. He did not provide further details about the incident.

In a separate case, the Taliban police command in southern Kandahar province said a tribal elder was shot dead on Monday night in Dand district, south of Kandahar city.

Asadullah Jamshid, spokesperson for the command, said the victim was targeted by unidentified armed men in the Kilometer Qala area of the district. He said Taliban authorities had launched efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.

The incidents are the latest in a growing number of reported killings and violent crimes in different parts of Afghanistan in recent months. A day earlier, local sources and Taliban authorities reported two similar killings in Samangan province in northern Afghanistan.

Although the Taliban say they have restored nationwide security since their return to power in 2021, residents and rights groups continue to raise concerns about rising criminal violence, targeted attacks and the limited information provided about investigations.

In many cases, Taliban authorities attribute attacks and killings to “unidentified armed men,” while few details are later released about arrests, prosecutions or convictions linked to the incidents.
