Gas Cylinder Explosion Kills Three Women in Eastern Afghanistan

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Three women from the same family were killed and one man injured after a gas cylinder exploded inside their house in eastern Afghanistan’s Khost province, local Taliban authorities said on Friday.

The Taliban police command in Khost said the blast occurred on Thursday evening in the Masjid Tepa area of Khost city, the provincial capital.

According to the police statement, the victims were members of the same family. Two sisters and their brother’s wife were killed in the explosion, while one man from the family was seriously injured and transferred to a local hospital for treatment.

Authorities said the cause of the explosion was not immediately known, and an investigation was underway.

Gas cylinders are widely used across Afghanistan for cooking and heating, particularly during winter, due to limited access to electricity and other modern energy sources. Such equipment is often used indoors, increasing the risk of deadly accidents.

Similar incidents have been reported in several provinces in recent weeks. Two weeks ago, a gas cylinder explosion killed two women and injured two children in Spin Ghar district of eastern Nangarhar province, local officials said.

Taliban authorities previously reported that at least 24 people, including women and children, died in gas-related incidents last winter, while nearly 900 cases of gas poisoning were recorded nationwide.

The incidents highlight the ongoing risks faced by families in Afghanistan, where economic hardship and limited access to safe energy sources increase vulnerability to such incidents.
