Young Man Killed, Another Wounded in Taliban Gunfire in Western Afghanistan

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A 26-year-old man was killed and another wounded when Taliban fighters opened fire at a checkpoint in western Afghanistan’s Herat province, local sources said on Friday.

The victim was identified as Nematullah Azizi, who was shot while driving home in his private car through the fifth district of Herat city on Thursday afternoon, January 15, the sources said.

According to the sources, as Azizi’s vehicle approached the checkpoint, several motorcyclists performing stunts passed through the area. Taliban fighters fired to stop the motorcyclists, but the bullets struck Azizi’s car, killing him and wounding his companion.

No further details were available on the condition of the injured man.

Local Taliban authorities in Herat have not commented on the incident.

Similar incidents have occurred in the past, with Taliban fighters using guns and force to maintain order and resolve disputes. This has raised growing concerns among citizens of Afghanistan about their safety and security, further exacerbating the challenges they face since the Taliban’s return to power.
