KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – AT least two children were killed and a woman and another child injured after a rocket warhead exploded in Faryab province in northern Afghanistan, Taliban officials said.
The explosion occurred at around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday in Qaisar district, on a road between the villages of Tawye Mast and Bori, according to a statement from the Taliban’s provincial police command.
Officials said one of the children died at the scene, while the second child died while being taken to hospital. The victims were aged 12 and 13.
The injured woman and child were transferred to a medical facility for treatment. No further details were provided about their condition.
Explosions caused by unexploded ordnance and landmines left behind from decades of war continue to pose a serious threat to civilians across Afghanistan, particularly children, who are often the most vulnerable.
Large parts of the country remain contaminated by explosive remnants of war, making everyday activities such as walking to school or tending livestock extremely dangerous.
According to the United Nations, an estimated 3.3 million people in Afghanistan live within one kilometer of areas contaminated by landmines and unexploded explosives.
