KABUL, AFGHANISTAN — Severe snowfall and rainfall across Afghanistan over the past two days have claimed the lives of 11 people and injured three others, authorities say.
Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, the spokesperson for the authority, said today (Thursday, January 22) that the casualties occurred in the provinces of Parwan, Bamyan, Maidan Wardak, Kandahar, Jowzjan, and Faryab.
In addition to the human toll, nine houses were partially destroyed, 11 families were affected, and 530 livestock perished. Key transport routes, including the Salang Highway, have been blocked, disrupting travel and access to remote areas.
Afghanistan often faces harsh winter weather, and such storms can exacerbate the difficulties of rural communities, many of whom already struggle with limited resources and infrastructure.
This follows a similar deadly event earlier this year. On 1 January, heavy rainfall and flooding across 11 provinces, including Kapisa, Parwan, Daikundi, Uruzgan, Kandahar, Helmand, Badghis, Faryab, Badakhshan, Herat, and Farah, killed at least 12 people, injured 11, and destroyed hundreds of homes, highlighting the recurring threat of natural disasters in the country.
