KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Saffron produced in Herat province, western Afghanistan, has once again been recognized as the world’s finest, winning the Superior Taste Award 2026 from the Brussels-based International Taste Institute.
The institute said a panel of international chefs evaluated saffron from multiple countries on taste, aroma, color, and overall quality. Herat saffron, represented by the company Herat Saffron, topped all categories in the “Herbs and Spices” competition. Judges praised its vibrant color, rich flavor, and distinctive aroma, setting it apart from saffron produced elsewhere.
The award marks the tenth year in a row that Herat saffron has been recognized worldwide for its distinctive aroma, vibrant color, and rich flavor.
Saffron cultivation has become a vital part of Herat’s agricultural economy, providing farmers with a lucrative alternative to traditional crops. While saffron production has expanded to other provinces, Herat remains the country’s primary hub.
Despite its success, Afghan saffron production faces serious challenges. Climate change and prolonged drought have reduced output, with the Afghanistan Saffron Union reporting just 40 tons harvested in the current solar year. Farmers continue to struggle with water scarcity and limited technical support, which have affected yields and overall production.
Experts say the international recognition of Herat saffron could boost exports, attract investment, and strengthen local economies. Continued support for farmers, improved irrigation systems, and better access to global markets are seen as crucial for sustaining Afghanistan’s position in the global saffron trade.
Herat saffron’s repeated success underscores the high quality of Afghan agricultural products and the resilience of local farmers in maintaining world-class standards under challenging conditions.
