Japan has announced a new humanitarian assistance package worth $19.5 million for Afghanistan, according to the Japanese embassy in Kabul.
In a statement posted on X on Friday (December 19), the embassy said it hoped the funding would help improve the lives of vulnerable and needy Afghans.
The embassy added that the assistance will address urgent humanitarian and basic human needs across the country and will be delivered through United Nations agencies, international organizations and Japanese non-governmental organizations.
Japan has been one of Afghanistan’s largest donors since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
According to figures released by the Embassy of Japan in Kabul, Japan’s total aid to Afghanistan since then has exceeded $549 million.
Humanitarian needs in Afghanistan have remained acute following years of conflict, economic collapse and restrictions imposed by the Taliban, with millions relying on assistance provided by the United Nations and aid agencies.
