KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Six members of a family, among them women and children, were killed by unidentified attackers in eastern Nangarhar province, local sources told KabulNow.
The incident took place Monday night in Surkhrod district, where unidentified assailants stabbed and beheaded the victims inside their home. The dead included an elderly man, two women, and three children, sources said.
The motive remains unclear. One source suggested the killings may be linked to a family member who served in the former Afghan army and later resettled in Germany after the Taliban returned to power.
The Taliban authorities in Nangarhar confirmed the killings. Sayed Tayyeb Hamad, spokesperson for the Taliban’s provincial police command, said investigations have been launched, but no suspects have been detained.
The killings come amid a rise in mysterious killings across Afghanistan. Similar cases have been reported in several provinces. Just a day earlier, a former Afghan soldier was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Hisarak district of Nangarhar.
Recent data collected by Etilaatroz and KabulNow shows that at least 60 people, including women, were mysteriously killed across Afghanistan in July. Many of these incidents remain unsolved, with no group or individual claiming responsibility.
Rights groups accuse the Taliban of failing to protect civilians and investigate crimes, despite the group’s repeated claims of providing security since 2021.
