KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Two armed opposition groups in Afghanistan have reported separate attacks on Taliban forces in Takhar and Kunduz provinces, claiming to have killed and injured seven Taliban members.
The Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF) said its fighters targeted a Taliban headquarters in Khwaja Bahauddin district, Takhar, on Friday night. Two Taliban members were killed and another was injured, the group said.
Meanwhile, the National Resistance Front (NRF) said it attacked a Taliban checkpoint in Kunduz city on Friday night, killing two Taliban members and wounding two others.
Both groups said none of their fighters were harmed in the attacks.
Taliban authorities have not yet commented on the attacks.
Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, several armed opposition groups have emerged. The AFF and NRF, mainly composed of former Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) members, have been active in northern provinces and around Kabul, increasingly carrying out guerrilla attacks.
The AFF, led by former ANDSF chief General Yasin Zia, says it has carried out 88 operations over the past year, killing 225 Taliban members and injuring 173 others.
While the Taliban downplays the impact of these groups, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted in his latest report that opposition forces carried out at least 72 verified attacks on Taliban forces in the past three months.
“While Taliban opponents did not gain control of any territory, they continued carrying out attacks,” Guterres said. “The National Resistance Front of Afghanistan claimed responsibility for 56 attacks, the Afghanistan Freedom Front for 16 between February and April 2025.”
