Mass Deportations from Iran Creating New Emergency in Afghanistan, UN Warns

KABUL – The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has warned of a looming humanitarian emergency as Iran continues mass deportations of Afghan migrants.

In a statement on Facebook Tuesday, UNAMA said thousands of Afghans are being expelled from Iran and sent back to Afghanistan every day.

The mission noted that authorities and humanitarian agencies are trying to manage the surge, but stressed that additional funding is urgently needed, especially in areas where returnees are resettling.

UNAMA also highlighted that reintegrating returnees into Afghan society will be one of the greatest challenges.

Iran has ramped up expulsions of Afghan migrants following its recent ceasefire with Israel, with thousands deported daily.

The large-scale deportations have sparked fears of worsening Afghanistan’s already dire humanitarian crisis.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 546,000 Afghans have returned from Iran since June 1, pushing the total number of returnees to over one million since the beginning of the year.
