KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Local sources report two separate incidents involving the suicide of a man and the murder of another in the southern provinces of Uruzgan and Kandahar.
In Uruzgan, a young man named Obaidullah reportedly took his own life with a firearm in the provincial capital, Tarinkot. A source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told KabulNow that Obaidullah was believed to have been suffering from a mental health condition.
Meanwhile in Kandahar city, another young man, identified as Sayed Ahmad, a shopkeeper, was shot dead around 9:00 a.m. Monday (June 2) in the Kariz area of District 5.
Local Taliban officials said the murder was carried out by armed robbers. According to them, the assailants fled the scene with Sayed Ahmad’s motorcycle, leaving behind their own older vehicle.
These incidents come amid a sharp rise in violent crime and mysterious killings across Afghanistan. In the past week alone, at least seven such deaths have been reported, including the murders of two children, a five-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy.
Despite the Taliban’s claims of having restored security since retaking power, they face increasing criticism from citizens, rights groups, and activists over their failure to protect civilians and their lack of transparency in investigating such crimes.
