KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A young girl died by suicide on Wednesday after jumping into a river in Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan province, local sources confirmed.
A resident told KabulNow that the girl threw herself from the Jowzun Bridge into the Kokcha River. Her body was later recovered near the Rabbani Bridge.
Details about her identity and the motive behind the suicide remain unknown.
The Taliban police spokesperson in Badakhshan did not respond to KabulNow’s request for comment.
This marks the second reported suicide in Badakhshan on the same day. Earlier, the Taliban’s provincial police announced that another young girl in Shighnan district took her life by ingesting rat poison.
Suicide rates among women and girls have risen sharply since the Taliban’s return to power.
Rights groups and health professionals cite forced and early marriages, domestic violence, and deteriorating mental health as driving factors. The regime’s bans on education, employment, and freedom of movement for women have compounded these pressures.
The dismantling of legal protections against gender-based violence has left many women with little recourse, deepening the sense of isolation and despair.
