KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A 28-year-old man was shot and killed by unknown armed individuals in Nangarhar province, eastern Afghanistan, as mysterious killings continue to rise across the country.
Local sources identified the victim as Hafizullah, who was killed inside his home in Nangarhar’s Kama district on Friday night, February 28.
The motive behind the incident remains unclear. However, sources said he had no known enemies and had recently graduated from university.
Local Taliban authorities confirmed the killing, saying an investigation is underway to identify the perpetrators.
The incident comes amid a rise in mysterious killings and criminal activities across Afghanistan in recent years. The country’s citizens are increasingly fearful for their safety, adding to the mounting challenges they face since the Taliban’s return to power, despite the group’s claims of ensuring security.
According to KabulNow data, at least 25 people, including women and young girls, were mysteriously killed across Afghanistan last month.
A report by Rawadari, a London-based human rights group, documented 193 cases of killings and injuries in targeted, mysterious, and extrajudicial attacks over a six-month period. The victims included 181 men, nine women, and three children.
Rights groups and activists have accused the Taliban of failing to provide security and conduct thorough investigations into such killings.
